The Fugitive Slave Act, or the Fugitive Slave Law was passed on September 18,1850 as a part of the Compromise of 1850 between the North and the South. It punished persons who aided runaway slaves, by fining or imprisoning people who sheltered, gave food, or helped runaway slaves.
