The kidney is a major site for systemic oxygen sensing, regulating blood erythrocyte and oxygen content by hypoxia-inducible erythropoietin expression. The renal medulla has a relative low partial pressure of oxygen and is susceptible to hypoxic injury being the region of the kidney that have the lesser concentration of oxygen detected.
