Let x be the total number of fish in the tank.

We know that at the beggining we had 400 fish and that then the number increased by 23%, this means that the total number of fish are:


\begin{gathered} x=400+400\cdot0.23 \\ x=400(1+0.23) \\ x=400(1.23) \end{gathered}

Therefore the nynumber of fish at the end is:


x=400(1.23)
