- 3x = - 3 ( divide both sides by - 3 )

x = 1

Substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

Substituting into (1)

5(1) + 2y = 17

5 + 2y = 17 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

2y = 12 ( divide both sides by 2 )

y = 6

solution is (1, 6 )
