A number one fourth of that number, and one third of that number are added. The result is 38. What is the original number? Check your solution.

Let the number be x, we have


\begin{gathered} x+(x)/(4)+(x)/(3)\text{ =38} \\ (12x+3x+4x)/(12)=38 \\ (19x)/(12)=38 \end{gathered}

cross multiply


\begin{gathered} 19x\text{ = 456} \\ x\text{ = }(456)/(19) \\ x=24 \end{gathered}

The original number is 24
