Simplify the equation.

\begin{gathered} x^2+6x-2=0 \\ x^2+2\cdot3\cdot x-2+(3)^2=0+(3)^2 \\ (x+3)^2=9+2 \\ (x+3)^2=11 \end{gathered}

Thus to complete the square 9 is added to both side of the equation.
