The claim proposed is an equation with a variable x which is hitherto unknown. When my friend says

48x=6\cdot12

he/she is right for as long as x turns out to be a real number.

Let us solve for x to find out whether my friend is right.

First, let us do the product 6* 12 on RHS (right- hand side) to get

48x=72

and finally, let us divide both sides by 48 to get

(48x)/(48)=(72)/(48)
\begin{gathered} x=(3)/(2) \\ \therefore x=1.5. \end{gathered}

So the value of x is 1.5 and my friend is right.
