we know that

The original figure can be divided into a square and a rectangle

see the attached figure

so

The area of the figure is equal to the area of a square plus the area of rectangle

area square=4^2=16 yd^2

area rectangle=5(9)=45 yd^2

total area=16+45=61 yd^2
