The sum of the ages of two siblings are 13 years. The difference of their ages is 5 years. Find the ages of each child.

Answer:

13 and 9

Explanation:

Let the present ages of two siblings be x and y years respectively.

x + y = 13…(i)

x – y = 5 …(ii)

On subtracting (ii) from (i), we get

2y = 8

Or y = 4

On substituting value of y in (i)

x +4 = 13

Or x = 13 – 4 = 9

Hence, the ages of the two brothers are 13 years and 9 years.
