When oxygen levels are low the kidney increases the reabsorption of bicarbonate. That cause of this is because when oxygen is lacking there is an increased ventilation that is responsible of metabolic acidosis. In this way, the kidney compensates for this acidosis by reabsorbing and increasing the level of bicarbonate in blood.
