Why is it important that the media is free from government control

Freedom of press is guaranteed in the first amendment to prevent the government indoctrinating the public with propaganda. The founding fathers did this so the U.S.A would never fall under tyrannical rule, however, it is important even freedom of press has its limits with slander and libel being banned. This stops downright ruining or lying about someone that affects their reputation in any way.
