How are Louisiana’s Supreme Court Justices chosen?

The current Louisiana Constitution of 1974, as amended in 1980, provides for a Supreme Court composed of a Justice elected from each of seven Supreme Court Districts, serving a term of 10 years.

In the state of Louisiana, state level Supreme Court Justices are elected through PARTISAN ELECTIONS. Unlike most states, Louisiana Supreme Court Justices are elected to represent specific districts. The only states currently using a similar system are Mississippi, Illinois, and Kentucky.
