A cat chases a mouse across a 1.48 m high table. The mouse steps out

of the way, and the cat slides off the table and strikes the floor 2.2 m from the edge of the table. What was the cat's speed when it slid off the table? At what velocity did the cat hit the floor?

Answer:

6.71 m/s magnitude

Step-by-step explanation:

d = 1/2 a t^2

1.48 = 1/2 (9.81)(t^2 ) t = .549 s

Vertical velocity is given by

vf = at

= 9.81 ( .549) = 5.39 m/s VERTICAL velocity

Crazy cat went horizontally 2.2 m in .549 s = 4 m/s horizontal velocity

Total velocity magnitude = sqrt (4^2 + 5.39^2) = 6.71 m/s
