How do I distinguish between Heptanol and heptanal using a chemical reagent. Give the respective observation as well.​

  • Use Brady's reagent or sodium nitrate.
  • Heptanol will remain unchanged in color
  • But Heotanal will be turned to slightly orange color

  • Heptanol means it's a alcohol.(C_7H_15OH)
  • Heotanal means it's a aldehyde

Use 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine ( Brady's reagent )

Observations;

• Heptanal → Orange solution is formed.

Observation;
