9 3/8- 8 7/8

I don't get it, my teacher wants it to not be an improper fraction but when I did the work, I got 2 and 12/8.

Can Someone help?

Answer:

(1)/(2)

Explanation:

9(3)/(8) -8(7)/(8)

Let's convert these to improper. To do this, we will multiply the denominator by the whole number and then add the numerator. The denominator will remain the same. We are just changing the numerator.
9(3)/(8) =((8*9)+3)/(8) =(72+3)/(8)= (75)/(8)\\8(7)/(8) =((8*8)+7)/(8) =(64+7)/(8)= (71)/(8)

Let's subtract:

(75)/(8) -(71)/(8) \\\\(4)/(8)

(4)/(8) can be reduced to
(1)/(2)
