Mixtures are in fact any 2 or more substances that are mixed together. It need not be homogeneous and the substances do not react in the mixture, hence they do not form new substances. Mixtures can me separated via physical means. Most commonly used is the difference in boiling points known as fractional distillation.
Solid in liquid mixtures are called suspensions. Those are also considered mixtures, specifically heterogeneous mixtures.
