Why must one side be zero when solving equations by factoring.

Answer:

We set one side of an equation zero while factoring to use the zero factor property. This property states that if the product of two factors is equal to zero, then at least one of the factors must be 0.

In other words, if ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0 or both a and b are 0.
