The cost of advertising in a local paper for one week is:

28 cents per word plus 75 cents
a) What is the cost of an advertisement of 15 words for one week?
b) What is the greatest number of words in an advertisement costing up to $8 for one week?
c) If an advertisement is run for two weeks, the cost for the second week is reduced by 30%. Calculate the total cost for an advertisement of 22 words for two weeks.

a) 495 cents

b) 25 words

c) 1174.7 cents

Explanation:

a) The cost is equal to 28 x 15 + 75 which equals 420 + 75 which equals 495 cents.

b) (800 cents - 75) divided by 28

= 725 / 28

= 25.9

Since you cannot have 0.9 of a word it is rounded down to 25.

c) 22 words in the first week will cost 22 x 28 + 75 = 616 + 75 = 691 cents

In the second week it will cost 30% less which means it will only cost 70% of the ordinary price. Therefore the second week will cost:

0.7 x 691 = 483.7 cents

Total = 483.7 + 691

= 1174.7 cents
