The bottom of a rectangular carton is to have an area of 2400 square centimeters. The length is to be one and one-half times the width. Compute the length and width dimensions

width = 40 cm

Explanation:

area of rectangle = length * width

as per given area = 2400 cm²

2400 = length * width

let width = x cm

according to the question:

length = 1 1/2 x

= 3/2 x = 3x/2

i.e.

2400 = 3x/2 * x

2400 * 2 = 3x²

x² = 4800/3 = 1600

x = √1600 = 40

thus,

width of rectangle = 40 cm

length = 3(40)/2 = 3(20) = 60 cm
