Here's the classification of each substance as a nonelectrolyte, weak electrolyte, or strong electrolyte in water:
a) H2SO3 (sulfurous acid) - Weak electrolyte
b) C2H5OH (ethanol) - Nonelectrolyte
c) NH3 (ammonia) - Weak electrolyte
d) KClO3 (potassium chlorate) - Strong electrolyte
e) Cu(NO3)2 (copper(II) nitrate) - Strong electrolyte
This classification is based on the extent to which these substances ionize or dissociate into ions when dissolved in water:
- Strong electrolytes ionize almost completely into ions in water.
- Weak electrolytes partially ionize into ions in water.
- Nonelectrolytes do not ionize into ions in water and remain mostly as molecules.
