To measure one gallon of milk without wasting any, the milkman needs to use both the three gallon and the five gallon jugs. He pours the milk from one jug to the other in specific steps.
In order to measure exactly one gallon of milk using the three gallon and five gallon jugs:
- Fill the five gallon jug completely.
- Pour from the five gallon jug into the three gallon jug until it is full.
- There will be two gallons left in the five gallon jug.
- Empty the three gallon jug.
- Pour the two gallons from the five gallon jug into the three gallon jug.
- Fill the five gallon jug again.
- Pour from the five gallon jug into the three gallon jug until it is full. This will fill up the remaining one gallon in the three gallon jug, leaving four gallons in the five gallon jug.
