cost for 100 pounds at a price of $3.3 per pound 2.80x + 5.30y = 3.30 * 100

x + y = 100

we have the system

x+y=100

2.8x+5.3y=330

by substitution: y= 100-x

we replace y in the 2nd equation

2.8x+5.3(100-x)=330

2.8x+530-5.3x=330

2.8x-5.3x=330-530

x=80
