We have 2 equations,

x1 + x2 = 4 (i)

x1 - x2 = 2 (ii)

adding (i) and (ii),

x1 + x1 + x2 - x2 = 4 + 2

we get,

2(x1) = 6

dividing both sides by 2

x1 = 6/2

x1 = 3

Now, putting the value of x1 into (i),

3 + x2 = 4

subtracting 3 from both sides,

3 + x2 - 3 = 4 - 3

x2 = 1

Hence the solution is,

a. (3, 1)
