What is the difference between a scalar and a vector quantity? ​

A scalar quantity has only magnitude, but no direction. Vector quantity has both magnitude and direction. Every scalar quantity is one-dimensional. Vector quantity can be one, two or three-dimensional.

Scalar quantity-

The quantities which contains magnitude only. It doesn't contain direction is reffered to as scalar quantity.

Some examples of scalar quantity are :

  • Mass
  • Length
  • Distance
  • speed
  • Power

Vector quantity-

The quantities which contains magnitude as well as direction is referred to as vector quantity.

Some examples of vector quantity are :

  • Velocity
  • Displacement
  • Acceleration
  • Force
  • Momentum
