when ice melts, the volume of the water is smaller than that of the ice. How does the mass of water compare to the mass of the ice?

The volume of ice is larger due to the hexagonal bonding pattern between the water molecules. However, when this hexagonal structure breaks down back into normal free moving water molecules, the number of water molecules should still remain constant. Hence, the mass should still remain the same.
