In 1888, the 19-year-old Gandhi left his home in India and traveled to London where he would train as a lawyer at the Inner Temple. He first took rooms at the Victoria Hotel, before a short spell in Richmond and finally settling in West Kensington. He visited Britain to attend the Second Roundtable Conference to discuss the future status of India within the British Empire. A law student in London in the 1890s, his legal training proved an asset in the Conference negotiations. Gandhi met many of Britain's political elite. In the event, the talks failed. However, Gandhi captured the public imagination. Wherever he went, he was mobbed by large, enthusiastic crowds.
Happy to help, have a great day! :)
