A square tile mesures 20 cm by 20cm a rectangular tile is 3 cm longer and 2 cm narrower. What is the different in area between the two tiles?

Answer:

  • Rectangular tile has 14 cm² larger area

Find each area and then find their difference.

  • A(square) = 20² = 400 cm²
  • A(rectangle) = (20 + 3)(20 - 2) = 23*18 = 414 cm²

The difference is:

  • 414 - 400 = 14 cm²
