In Act 4 of Romeo and Juliet, Paris visits Friar Lawrence to make arrangements for his upcoming marriage to Juliet. Meanwhile, Juliet is planning to fake her own death so that she can escape her arranged marriage to Paris and be with Romeo. Friar Lawrence agrees to help Juliet, giving her a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. Juliet takes the potion and is discovered by her family, who believe she is dead and lay her to rest in the Capulet tomb. Romeo, who has not received word of the plan, believes that Juliet is truly dead and goes to the Capulet tomb to kill himself. There, he encounters Paris and the two fight, resulting in Paris's death. Romeo then finds Juliet's body and, believing she is dead, drinks poison and dies. Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead and, unable to live without him, stabs herself and dies.
