Answer:

It is 0 but the '()' go first. So, basically, ignore them. You start with -1 minus 3, then so on.

(-1)-3+9-5

-4+9-5

5-5=0

Becomes:

(-1) + 6 - 5

Is equal to:

(-1) + 1

Which is 0, like you described. You messed up on the second step, regarding to -3 and 9. -3 + 9 is 6, not -12.
