Yes. They had gained many substantial rights during the Reconstruction era such as the right to vote and hold office. Although they had gained these rights, shortly thereafter Jim Crow laws were introduced to separate blacks from whites. This is where the term “separate but equal” comes from. Although by law blacks had the same status as other citizens, they were separated from others.

the simple answer no. they were not able to keep the gains. during this time there was still a social class almost like a teired set of classes set. sorry this sound weird. not all places, and especially the south were accepting of equality. so no they could not keep the gains
