Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia traveled to Geneva, Switzerland to address the League of Nations on June 30, 1936. The League of Nations was an intergovernmental organization founded after World War I to promote international cooperation, peace, and security.
Emperor Haile Selassie's address to the League of Nations was in response to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, which began in October 1935. Haile Selassie's speech was a passionate plea for the League of Nations to uphold its charter and defend the sovereignty of Ethiopia against the aggression of fascist Italy. He condemned the lack of action on the part of the international community to stop the invasion and warned that if the League of Nations did not take decisive action to defend Ethiopia, the consequences would be catastrophic for the whole world.
Despite Haile Selassie's powerful speech, the League of Nations failed to take effective action to halt the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, and the country was occupied by Italy until 1941.
