Is car exhaust a direct or indirect source of particulate matter?

Car exhaust is a direct source of particulate matter (PM). When an engine burns fuel, it produces PM directly as a byproduct of combustion. This PM can then be emitted into the air through the exhaust system of the car. Therefore, car exhaust is considered a direct source of PM.
