We know that the board is 8 ft long, which is equivalent to 96 inches. Let's call the length of the shorter piece "x".

According to the problem, the longer piece is 48 inches longer than the shorter piece. So the length of the longer piece can be expressed as:

x + 48

Now we can set up an equation to represent the fact that the board was cut into two pieces:

x + (x + 48) = 96

Simplifying the equation, we get:

2x + 48 = 96

Subtracting 48 from both sides, we get:

2x = 48

Dividing both sides by 2, we get:

x = 24

So the length of the shorter piece is 24 inches (or 2 ft), and the length of the longer piece is:

x + 48 = 24 + 48 = 72

So the longer piece is 72 inches (or 6 ft).
