Jason, age 2, has recently been diagnosed as anemic. He dislikes meat and vegetables but eats large quantities of fruits and drinks at least two servings of milk at each meal. Why is Jason’s anemia a concern? What adjustments can Ruby make in his diet to help meet his nutritional needs?

Answer:

Anaemia is a medical disorder that causes weariness, weakness, shortness of breath, and other health concerns due to a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin. Anaemia can have a detrimental impact on growth and development in young children like Jason which can be a problem. Jason's diet seems to be lacking in iron, even though he's been drinking lots of milk and eating fruits but it doesn't have enough iron. The type of adjustments Ruby can make in his diet is to eat meat, fish, beans, soy products or bread. Ruby can start giving him fruits that are high in vitamin. We know that Jason doesn't like meat and vegetables but Ruby can give him smaller portion of vegetable and meat for his meal, instead of forcing him, Ruby should let him freely explore a variety of vegetables and meat. Before trying out different types of meat and vegetables Ruby should consult with a pediatrician or a registered dietitian to determine if additional supplementation or medical interventions are necessary.
