Under the terms of the treaty, Mexico ceded more than half of its territory to the United States, including present day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The drastic expansion of U.S. territory greatly increased the size of the United States and helped solidify its position as a major world power.
