In 1973, David Gross and Frank Wilczek, and independently David Politzer, discovered the key property of asymptotic freedom that underlies quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, the quantum field theory of the strong force – an achievement for which all three shared the 2004 Nobel prize in physics.
