(What part of wooden block (50cm x 30cm x 20cm) remains above the surface of water when the wooden block is placed in water? Out of 20cm height of it, what part of its height remains inside water? (The density of wood and water are 0.8gm/em' and 1gm/cm' respectively).

Answer:

Wb = Vb ρb weight of block = volume block * density block

Ww = Vs * ρw weight of water displaced = volume block submerged * density of water

Vb ρb = Vs * ρw Archimedes Principle

Vs / Vb = ρb / ρw = .8

.8 of block = Vs / Vb .8 of block or 16 cm is submerged
