The temperature of the Earth surface is elevated due to the radiation received from the Sun. The warm surface of the Earth radiates this heat energy back into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide gas molecules have a propensity to absorb the heat. This thermal energy is absorbed by the atmospheric carbon dioxide molecules. As a result, when there are more carbon dioxide molecules in the atmosphere, there is also more heat energy, which raises Earth's surface temperature. As a result, the planet warms.
