Todd Jefferson can buy 2 gallons of ice cream for $3.87, 3 gallons for $4.10, or 1 gallon for $1.98. What is the unit price of the best buy, rounded to the nearest tenth of a cent?

Answer: $1.367 per gallon (The 3 gallon ice cream is the best buy)

Explanation: For this problem we need to understand that a “unit price” is the cost for one of the item. In this case, our unit is one gallon of ice cream. So with that, we need to find the best deal. We can do that by dividing the total cost by the number of gallons.

$3.87 / 2 == $1.935 per gallon

$4.10 / 3 == $1.367 per gallon

$1.98 / 1 == $1.98 per gallon.
