Dalvin and Fatoumata work at a dry cleaners ironing shirts. Dalvin can iron 10 shirts per hour, and Fatoumata can iron 20 shirts per hour. Dalvin worked twice as many hours as Fatoumata and they ironed 200 shirts between them. Write a system of equations that could be used to determine the number of hours Dalvin worked and the number of hours Fatoumata worked. Define the variables that you use to write the system.

The number of hours Dalvin worked, x, and the number of hours Fatoumata worked, y, is 10 hours and 6 hours respectively.

How to write a system of equation?

Let

Number of hours Dalvin worked = x

Number of hours Fatoumata worked = y

10x + 20y = 200 (1)

x = 2y. (2)

Substitute x = 2y into the equation (1)

10x + 20y = 200

10(2y) + 20y = 200

20y + 20y = 200

40y = 200

Divide both sides by 40

y = 200/40

y = 5

Substitute y = 5 into (2)

x = 2y

x = 2(5)

x = 10

Therefore, Dalvin worked 10 hours and Fatoumata worked 5 hours.
