y = 5

Explanation:

3y - x = -1 (1)

x = y + 11 (2)

by substituting value of x from equation (2) into equation (1)

3y - (y + 11) = -1

3y - y - 11 = -1

2y = -1 + 11

2y = 10

y = 10/2 = 5

by substituting value of y into equation (2)

x = 5 + 11 = 16

thus,

x = 16, and

y = 5
