Answer: average = (t+w)/2

We add up the distances. Then divide by 2.

An example: The ship travels t = 5 miles on Tuesday and w = 7 miles on Wednesday. The average would be (t+w)/2 = (5+7)/2 = 12/2 = 6 miles.

Notice how this is the midpoint formula.
