Dorothea Dix convinced the United States Congress and state legislatures to build hospitals to help the treatment of the mentally ill. She conducted extensive research and investigations into the inhumane conditions of mental asylums across the country and tirelessly advocated for reform. Her efforts resulted in the establishment of many mental hospitals throughout the United States during the mid-19th century.
