Water is an essential nutrient because it helps the body regulate its temperature, transport nutrients and oxygen to cells, lubricate joints, flush toxins from the body, and cushion organs and tissues. It also helps maintain the balance of body fluids and is necessary for digestion, absorption, and excretion of food and nutrients.
