How did the articles of confederation prevent the national government from becoming too powerful?

Answer: The Articles of Confederation allowed the states to print their own money, declare war, and have their own currency. The national government could not collect taxes (they had to ask). It also did not have a national court system, so when the states were fighting, they had no court to go to.
