In 1521, the pope excommunicated him, and he was called to appear before the emperor at the Diet of Worms to defend his beliefs. Refusing to recant or rescind his positions, Luther was declared an outlaw and a heretic.

At the Diet of Worms in 1521, Luther was famously "tried" and asked to recant his teachings, most notably his heresy against the Catholic Church. He famously responded with the phrase "Here I stand, I can do no other," and was declared an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Despite Luther's efforts to be heard, the Edict of Worms declared him a heretic and tried to suppress his ideas.
