The American Civil War. Napoleon III saw the war between the Union and the Confederate states as an opportunity to invade Mexico. France at the time was supported by Britain and Spain with the goal of collecting debts from Mexico. Though initially successful, American and victories by the Mexicans turned the tide of the war and France withdrew from Mexico.
