- arrived too late in season to cultivate crops for food, so they faced rationing
- poor local governing body (since one hadn't really been officially established), so they faced constant quarreling amongst themselves
- they faced continual fear of attacks from native americans
- they faced disease and fever due to the new & unknown environment & poor diet
