Why was the louisiana purchase a bit of an embarassement for jefferson

A: he ended up paying much more then the land was worth
B: the purchase ended up being very unpopular with americans
C: his decision to buy the land went against his own belief to strictly follow the words of the constitution
D: the french represented the land as much larger than it actually was

I think that the best answer is the second one:
They had pledged to fight with other countries,
although in a way, the first is also appropriate, as Europe was witnessing a lot of internal tensions at the time. But the main and more direct reason was that they had pledged to fight with others.
