Protect injured person by clearing his or her immediate area.
Rest the injury. No additional movement should be made which may aggravate the injury.
Ice the injury or injured area to reduce swelling and inflammation
Compress the swollen area to bring down its swelling
Elevate the injured area to a point higher than the heart to reduce blood flow in the area and reduce swelling.

For knee injuries, first aid kit items would be instant cold compress or ice pack, bandages (triangular or roller) for compression, and pain medication.
